Amarula strides into India’s cosmopolitan cities

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

amarulaAspri Spirits, one of India’s leading importers and distributors of premium beverages has recently introduced Amarula, a premium fruit based cream liqueur brand from South Africa based Distell Group. Amarula is made from a sweet and luscious fruit grown in Africa, called the marula. Before the aficionados of this drink can start savoring its richness, the marula has to be handpicked, pulped and sweetened. After that it is allowed to ferment into a world-class drink.
Having already bagged two prestigious awards – International Wine and Spirits Competition 2007 (IWSC) and Overseas Living award 2008 – there is no doubt that Amarula has what it takes to enchant and entice large sections of India’s drinking population. Its fine taste and its capability to go with different kinds of foods is a plus point. The image of the elephant is there in the bottle because the African elephant likes to dine on marula fruit.

It should come as no surprise that Amarula was launched in Mumbai, which ranks amongst India’s most liberal cities. Alcohol consumption is highest in this city. The exact location was Mumbai’s swanky Hotel Calridges. At the launch party, glasses full of Amarula were firmly supported by a sumptuous array of choice deserts and other epicurean products that had cream based liquor as their key ingredient. Needless to say it was a night to remember at Mumbai’s Hotel Calridges.

Flamingo International, in partnership with Distell in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, is set to promote Amarula in its duty free shops at the airports and sea ports in India. As of now Amarula is available at select stores at major airports and in five star hotels. The drink can also be bought from leading wine stores in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

“Amrula is the first cream liqueur product in the country and one can easily make various cocktail drinks using chocolate, vanilla and coffee. Currently, Amarula is available in over 100 countries and well accepted in the US, African and European markets,” Sumedh Singh Mandla, CEO, Aspri Spirits, told us while we guzzled glass after glass of this sweet stuff.
