Imagine an avant-garde car
that is capable of assuming
different shapes in a blink
of an eye. That may sound
like a story plucked from the
realms of science fiction, but
then BMW is one car maker
that has already perfected the art of
turning science fiction into reality.
So the question to ask is how does
the car called Gina Light Visionary
Model Concept Car become capable
of changing shapes? The answer lies
in the material out of which its body
is built. It is cloth. A fabric woven
out of special alloys is placed over a
mesh-work of metal wires that can
move, controlled by eletro-hydraulic
devices.
Technically speaking Gina is
capable of changing shapes as many
times as the person behind the
wheels may decide to do so. Along
with the exterior, you can also make
many kinds of changes into the car’s
interior. Now you may be wondering
when this amazing car will go into
production. Unfortunately, that
is a tightly kept secret. It is also
possible that the BMW may refrain
from letting Gina hit the assembly
line. Gina is more about theoretical
research, rather than about actually
having a real vehicle. Built over a
Z8 platform, and in all probability
a V8 engine gushing under its cloth
bonnet, this concept car is meant
to change the way we think about
automobiles. |
